You have special access to this web page as a colleague, supporter, fan, or friend of Linda and the Alaska Longline Fishermen's Association (ALFA).

Linda DOES NOT know this yet, but she recently received an award from the Alaska State Legislature!

We want to celebrate this award and we hope that you can join us!

Since we know that Linda’s friends, family and fans are a far-flung crew, we've created three ways to join in on the surprise and celebration.

Please join us for one, or better yet, all three!

The Thirtieth Alaska Legislature recently recognized Linda’s 25-plus years of exceptional and tireless efforts as ALFA's Executive Director and as a champion for small boat fishermen and fishing families, sustainable fisheries, thriving coastal communities and economies.

Join us at the Award Reception at 6 pm on November 10th 2017 in the Del Shirley Room (of Oddess Theater) on the Sitka Fine Arts Campus.

Enjoy delicious local seafood appetizers created by award-winning Chef Lionel Uddipa, grilled black cod tips, local beer, and much more! There is no charge for this event, but any contributions toward the food and drinks will go to the Fishery Conservation Network.

The surprise award will be presented to Linda by Representative Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins at 7pm. Please RSVP by November 8th to alfastaff2@gmail.com or by texting 907-738-8002 if you can attend.

This event is first come/first reserved. Please RSVP right away to reserve your spot!

Can’t make the event? Consider an audio postcard! Let Linda know that you are thinking of her. Call 907-747-3400 for directions on how to submit one.

We are making a personal scrapbook to present to Linda, and you are invited to participate! We hope to fill it with all the reasons we are grateful for her perseverance, friendship, and dedication. Share your favorite Linda memories, tell Linda why she is important to you, add pictures, quotes or stories.

Scrapbook pages are DUE NOVEMBER 8TH! Send your page electronically to alfa.staff@gmail.com or mail it to P.O. Box 1229 Sitka, AK 99835 care of Brooke Schafer. The dimensions should be 12X12.

3. consider contributing to an ALFA program near and dear to Linda's heart.

A donation to the Fishery Conservation Network of any size makes a huge difference-- here is why we are asking you to join us in making a contribution to this program:

a. Founded by Linda and her team, the Fishery Conservation Network (FCN) is an ALFA program with a proven track record of success in engaging fishermen, scientists, and researchers to bring innovative solutions to the fishing fleet and our fishing communities.

The FCN has grown steadily even though it has been primarily a volunteer initiative.  FCN is ready to be taken to scale! Linda and our local fishermen know the value of this program and have donated countless hours to make it successful-- fishermen have donated thousands hours of at-sea time to help scientists conduct research on boats that would already be out on the water fishing (cutting costs and environmental impact). A huge thanks to all those fishermen that donated time!

b. We need the community's support to show the value of FCN to major grantors (community buy-in is one of the most important criteria to our major granters).

We have set a goal to find 40 donors to help us celebrate the 40 years of ALFA's existence. Help us reach our goal and pledge today! Any amount makes a huge difference!  We will be surprising Linda with the total amount her friends, colleagues and fans have donated to the FCN (or ALFA program of choice) at the award ceremony. Join us in making a contribution!

For more information, questions or to RSVP, email alfastaff2@gmail.com, call or text 907-738-8002 or call 907-747-3400.

ALFA’s Fishery Conservation Network (FCN) engages fishermen in research and conservation initiatives. We believe fishermen are among the most innovative and resourceful people on the planet, and look to our members to identify solutions to research challenges. With fishermen-generated ideas, we design tools that assist the fleet in mentoring other fishermen and improving fishing practices.

ALFA launched the Fishery Conservation Network with the generous support of the Oak Foundation. Many members of the fishing fleet have joined – and over the past five years, over seventy commercial fishermen have worked together on projects such as reducing rockfish bycatch rates and mapping seafloor habitat.
